Hamsters breed best between about 10 weeks and 15 months old. Breeding is best left to experienced breeders because hamsters, especially females, can become aggressive. Some hamsters also carry inherited health problems, so breeding without knowing their background is risky.
Because hamsters can breed at such a young age, separating male and female hamsters before they're 8 weeks old to prevent accidental litters is important.
Pregnancy lasts 16–22 days, depending on the variety of hamster. Syrian hamsters are usually pregnant for 16–17 days. Near birth, a female might look rounder, become restless, and sometimes have vaginal bleeding. Give her nesting material so she feels safe.
Don't disturb a mother and her babies for at least 7 days after birth, especially if this is her first litter. Too much stress can lead her to abandon or eat the pups. During this time, give food and water only as needed.

A normal litter has 6–8 pups. Newborn pups are hairless, and their eyes and ears are closed, but they already have front teeth. In most cases, you can begin gentle handling at about 7 days old.
Softened solid food can be offered at about 10 days, and food and water should be placed where the pups can reach them. They are weaned at 21–28 days.
