Pigs of all ages are susceptible to enteric viral infections, and diarrhea is the clinical sign common to all such disorders, with some viruses also causing vomiting. (See the table .) Enteric viruses are typically transmitted via the fecal-oral route, and many are highly transmissible, making biosecurity within and between farms important to preventing the spread of disease. Gross lesions of enteric viral infections, particularly in suckling and recently weaned pigs, are often indistinguishable, and definitive diagnosis requires diagnostic testing, such as PCR assay and histological evaluation.
