Systemic gout, chameleon
Systemic gout due to severe renal disease in a chameleon. Note the pale, swollen kidney (arrow), and typical gout tophus in the histology image. Urate is dissolved during histological processing, leaving a characteristic, radiating, starred pattern. Photomicrograph insert: H&E stain; original magnification, 400X.
