Wolbachia pipientis, a symbiotic bacterium associated with filarid parasites, resides within the uterus and lateral chords. In this photomicrograph, Wolbachia bacteria are identified within the lateral chords of this adult Dirofilaria immitis by red-staining antigens on the surface of the organisms.
