New FDA rules governing the use of certain antibiotics in animal feed take effect January 1, 2017. Medicated feeds can still be used to prevent, control, or treat disease in animal herds, but they need to be used under the direction of a veterinarian. Producers and veterinarians will also need to keep records of those uses and there will need to be a valid veterinarian-client-patient relationship.
