Autologous blood transfusion
A dog receiving an autologous blood transfusion through a manual bolus. This patient had a hemoabdomen and was receiving the transfusion to restore intravascular volume and RBCs. Blood was suctioned during the laparotomy into a sterile canister, transferred into a sterile IV bag, and then aspirated from that bag by the anesthesia assistant with the aid of a three-way stopcock, through a filter, to the patient’s IV catheter. Blood can also be collected via centesis (abdominal or thoracic) and administered in a similar fashion.
