Autologous blood transfusion

An autologous blood transfusion is being manually bloused into a patient. This patient had a hemoabdomen and was receiving the transfusion to restore intravascular volume and red blood cells. The blood was suctioned during the laparotomy into a sterile canister and transferred into a sterile IV bag. The blood is being aspirated from that bag and administered by the anesthesia assistant with aid of a three-way stopcock through a filter to the patient’s IV catheter.
