Heat stress, Thoroughbred

Thoroughbreds are susceptible to heat stress when racing in hot and humid climates. The energy generated even during short races can lead to increases in core body temperature in excess of 43° C (109.4° F). This is a different pathophysiological process to heat stress in endurance and eventing horses, where fluid and electrolyte loss is more prevalent.
