Reportable Diseases Found in Rabbits

Some diseases of rabbits can also infect people and are considered to be public health concerns. Veterinarians or laboratories that diagnose one of these diseases must report it to certain local, state, or national agencies. Reporting a disease allows these agencies to identify disease patterns and prevent further spread to other pets and people.

Reportable diseases in rabbits include:

• Rabbit calicivirus disease (viral hemorrhagic disease)

• Tularemia (a serious, potentially fatal bacterial infection that can spread to other animals and people through tick or deer fly bites)
