A strain of heartworms resistant to preventive medications has surfaced again in Louisiana. Although rare, several resistant strains have been identified since 2011. Veterinarians at LSU discuss their role in identifying the strains involved and stress that pets should continue to receive preventive medications, as this is the best way to reduce the risk of the disease.
