Dilated Cardiomyopathy in Dogs Linked to Grain-free Diets

10/08/18 By
MSD Veterinary Manual

The FDA issued an alert to veterinarians about an increase in cases of dilated cardiomyopathy in breeds not usually prone to the disorder. The disease was associated with eating diets containing a mix of specific ingredients, such as peas, lentils, and potatoes (i.e., grain-free commercial foods).

Veterinarians are encouraged to report suspected cases to the FDA using their Safety Reporting Portal

More about the link between cardiomyopathy and diet in dogs can be read in Veterinary Practice News.

Nutritional recommendations for dogs are available in the MSD Veterinary Manual.
