AVMA reports that there is a shortage of candidates to fill vacancies in many veterinary specialties, both at universities and in private practice. For example, the American College of Veterinary Radiology had 70 job listings in August, but only certified 43 new specialists in the field in the past year. The situation is similar in a range of other specialties as well. The limited number of residency training programs means that filling the need for more specialists may be difficult.
