Marburg Virus Identified in Bats in West Africa

Marburg virus, which causes a hemorrhagic fever similar to that caused by Ebola virus, has been identified for the first time in fruit bats in Sierra Leone. The team that found the virus is a part of project Predict, a US-led effort to identify potential human pathogens and take steps to control them before they cause outbreaks in people.
