Researchers at USDA have published results of a successful test of a new vaccine against African swine fever virus. The new vaccine offered complete protection against the strain currently causing an epidemic in eastern Europe and Asia. Deletion of a newly discovered gene produced complete attenuation in the virulence of the virus. There are currently no vaccines available for African swine fever, so development of this strain into a commercial vaccine would be an important step in controlling the disease.

More information on the new vaccine strain for African swine fever can be read at Bloomberg. The original research report is available from the Journal of Virology.
