O Clostridium perfringens é uma bactéria amplamente distribuída no solo e no trato gastrointestinal dos animais. Ela possui a capacidade de produzir substâncias tóxicas (toxinas) fora da célula bacteriana. A inflamação dos intestinos (enterite) e a absorção de toxinas (conhecida como enterotoxemia) ocorrem quando essas substâncias tóxicas são liberadas. Cinco tipos de Clostridium perfringens foram identificados, porém apenas um, o tipo A, causa enterotoxemia em cães. O tipo A também está associado à diarreia em cães. A diarreia pode ser sanguinolenta, de início súbito e grave, ou de longa duração e intermitente.
