Bovine Papular Stomatitis

If pseudocowpox is present in a cattle herd, calves and young cattle may show similar lesions on the muzzle and within the mouth, particularly on the hard palate. Bovine papular stomatitis is generally considered to be caused by another parapoxvirus closely related to the viruses causing pseudocowpox and orf.

Although the disease is of little clinical importance, the presence of circular lesions in the mouth can raise the suspicion that they are ruptured vesicles associated with reportable diseases, such as foot-and-mouth disease and vesicular stomatitis. The diagnostic tests for pseudocowpox are applicable to bovine papular stomatitis.
