Dr. Alexandra Winter

Dr. Alexandra Winter joined The MSD Manuals in February 2021 as the new Editor-in-Chief of The MSD Veterinary Manual. In this role, she hopes to advance the health of both animals and humans by providing a useful resource to veterinary medical professionals, students, industry professionals, and animal owners.

Alexandra received her veterinary medical degree and a research degree in equine exercise physiology from the University of Sydney, Australia. She completed an internship in equine medicine and surgery at Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine, a postdoctoral fellowship in cardiopulmonary physiology at the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine Division of anesthesiology, and an equine surgery residency at The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine.

Prior to joining The MSD Manuals, Alexandra worked as an academic equine surgeon, clinician educator and an editor at the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association. Alexandra serves as a member of the Veterinary Surgery journal's editorial board and as associate editor of the Journal of Exotic Pet Medicine. She is an alumna and has served as invited faculty for the Leading Innovations in Healthcare and Education course at the Harvard Macy Institute at Harvard University. She is frequently an invited speaker at Stanford Medicine X, a global program merging technology, design, and medicine, at Stanford School of Medicine.

Alexandra recently served on the Residency Program Compliance Committee of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons and is a founding member and officer of the Association of Women Veterinary Surgeons. Her clinical and research interests include surgical critical care, surgical education, reproducibility, meta-research, professional identity formation, and the role of the humanities in health professions education. She continues regular clinical and academic teaching activities.

Alexandra lives in Chicago, IL where she is part of the city’s vibrant arts community. “Sometimes I make things.” She loves all things art and design and also spends time coaching young professional ballet dancers. Alexandra is excited to be entrusted to care for the legacy of The MSD Veterinary Manual and looks to the future with great optimism. “Collectively, we can be a force for good.”
