Chikungunya is a virus that is spread by mosquitoes. The virus has been identified in Africa, Asia, Europe, the Americas, and some Pacific and Indian islands. Nonhuman primates, particularly macaques, vervet monkeys, and baboons, are the source of infection in the wild. Rodents, bats, reptiles, and amphibians are also potential sources.

Animals can't spread chikungunya directly to people, and people can't spread this infection directly to others. Both infected animals and people can spread the virus to another mosquito when bitten.

Symptoms of Chikungunya in Animals

Although many types of animals can have chikungunya virus and act as a source of infection, it is extremely rare for them to develop symptoms.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Chikungunya in Animals

Diagnosis of chikungunya in animals is through blood testing by a genetic test in the first 7 days and then by testing the blood serum. Animals might be tested as a method of tracking the disease in a particular area.

There is no specific treatment for chikungunya infection in animals.

Prevention of Chikungunya

The best way to prevent chikungunya is to protect against mosquito bites, with a combination of insect repellents, environmental control (like getting rid of standing water where mosquitoes live), and barriers such as mosquito netting.

Important Zoonotic Points Regarding Chikungunya

  • Chikungunya is caused by a virus that is spread by mosquito bites.

  • Animals don't spread this disease from one to another.

  • People can't get this disease from other people or animals.

    • Exceptions:

      • People working with the blood of infected people can get infected.

      • Pregnant women who are infected can transmit the virus to their fetus.

  • Mosquito control is the most important step in disease prevention.

  • There is no specific treatment for chikungunya in animals.
