Chemotherapy is used to treat cancer in animals, just as it is in people.
Chemotherapy drugs are usually given in combinations (protocols) to increase effectiveness in fighting cancer. The combination of drugs used depends on the type of cancer and the species being treated. Chemotherapy also can be used before surgery to shrink tumors or after surgery to decrease the likelihood that tumors will come back.
The decision to use chemotherapy depends on the tumor type, the animal’s condition, and the cost. Responses to chemo vary—from symptom improvement without longer survival, to complete remission (disappearance of cancer). Some cancers, like canine lymphoma, often respond well to chemotherapy. If you are considering chemotherapy for your pet, discuss the risks and benefits with your veterinarian.
