Under some circumstances it may be desirable to enhance the activity of an animal's immune system as a whole. This may include stimulation of the normal immune response to enhance protection or an effort to treat immunosuppressive conditions.
Several types of immunostimulators have been used in veterinary medicine. They commonly contain microbial components such as mycobacterial cell walls or endotoxins, and many act by stimulating one or more toll-like receptors or related pattern recognition receptors.
