Pigs of all ages are susceptible to enteric bacterial infections, and diarrhea is the clinical sign common to nearly all such disorders. (See the table .)

Infectious agents that cause enteropathies are typically transmitted via the fecal-oral route. Some enteric bacterial infections are precipitated by stress or feed changes, and the colonic microbiota is heavily influenced by undigested substrates that are available for colonic fermentation.
