In acute cases, the mucosa of the esophagus may show ecchymotic hemorrhages and ulcers (left). The esophago-proventricular sphincter may be seen as a hemorrhagic ring. In more chronic cases, the lumen gets lined with a yellowish-white membrane (right) or, in some cases, there may be sloughing of the entire mucosa.
